What begins as a baffling case of stolen magic tricks quickly transforms into an international adventure with all the twists of a thriller in director Mathew Testa’s riveting documentary. When professional magicians discover that their original tricks are being stolen and illegally sold online, and with their profits and businesses under threat of vanishing, they form a coterie of vigilante sleuths who conjure up a plan to track down the anonymous culprits who are putting their art and careers at risk. Led by renowned illusionist Andi Gladwin (and featuring appearances by Penn & Teller and other masters of the craft) their search leads them across continents — from Hollywood’s Magic Castle to Cairo, the Czech Republic and beyond — and deep into a digital underworld of deception, extortion, threats and cyberattacks. Packed with intrigue and blending true crime with a rare, behind-the-curtain peek into the world of this incredible craft, STEALING MAGIC reveals the extraordinary lengths artists will go to defend their life’s work.
