Conjurly News — Editorial Operation
Our Commitment to the Magic Community
Conjurly is the global platform where the magic community connects. Conjurly News is the platform’s editorial operation, serving that mission by delivering accurate, fair, and thoughtfully reported coverage of the art of magic — its history, its practitioners, its culture, and its place in the broader world of entertainment.
This editorial policy governs all content published under the Conjurly News banner. It applies to staff editors, contributing writers, freelancers, and any individual publishing through the Conjurly platform in a journalistic capacity. We publish this document publicly because we believe our community deserves to understand how editorial decisions are made.
1. Mission and Scope
Conjurly News covers the global magic community, including performance magic, close-up and parlor magic, stage illusion, mentalism, cardistry, and related disciplines. Our coverage extends to performers, creators, manufacturers, collectors, historians, educators, magic organizations, and the live entertainment industry as it intersects with magic.
We serve two audiences: the magic community itself — hobbyists, semi-professionals, and working professionals — and the general public seeking to understand and engage with the art form. Our editorial standards apply equally to content intended for either audience.
2. Editorial Independence
Conjurly News operates with full editorial independence from all other Conjurly operations, including the social platform, marketplace, directory, events, and educational operations. Advertising relationships, sponsorships, directory listings, membership status, and marketplace participation have no influence on editorial coverage decisions. Stories are not written, suppressed, favorably slanted, or assigned based on any business relationship.
Vendors, performers, and organizations participating in any Conjurly operation — including the directory, marketplace, or events operations — receive no preferential editorial treatment as a result of that participation. Conversely, they are not disadvantaged in coverage because of it.
If a business relationship between Conjurly and a subject of coverage could reasonably raise a question of editorial independence, we will disclose that relationship within the relevant article.
3. Accuracy and Fact-Checking
Accuracy is our most fundamental obligation. Before publication, all factual claims — including dates, names, credits, biographical information, and event details — are verified against reliable sources. Where primary sources are unavailable, we note that limitation.
3.1 Source Standards
We rely on primary sources wherever possible: interviews with subjects, official statements, published records, and firsthand observation. Secondary sources — other publications, databases, historical references — are used when primary sources are unavailable and are identified as such.
Anonymous sources are used sparingly and only when the information is material, the source has firsthand knowledge, and no alternative exists. We do not grant anonymity solely to allow sources to make negative characterizations of other individuals. Anonymous sourcing will be disclosed to readers with appropriate explanation.
3.2 Historical Content
Magic has a rich and sometimes contested history. When covering historical events, credits, and attributions — particularly regarding the origins of effects, routines, or innovations — we acknowledge when the historical record is disputed. We do not adjudicate long-standing attribution debates but present the range of documented perspectives honestly.
4. The Magician’s Code and the Protection of Secrets
Conjurly is published by and for the magic community, and we operate with deep respect for the tradition of protecting magical methods. This is not merely a convention — it is the foundation upon which professional magic as an art form rests.
Conjurly News will not publish, describe, explain, or meaningfully hint at the methods, workings, or construction of magical effects, regardless of whether those methods are considered widely known in some circles. This commitment applies to all editorial content: reviews, profiles, interviews, historical articles, and features.
When an interviewer or subject touches on technical matters, those portions of discussions are handled with discretion. We do not create content that could be used by a non-magician to understand or replicate a magical effect.
This policy is not a limitation on our journalism — it is an expression of our identity and our responsibility to the community we serve.
5. Fairness and Conflicts of Interest
5.1 Right of Response
When Conjurly News publishes content that makes a negative characterization of a living individual or organization, we make a reasonable and documented effort to obtain a response from that party before publication. If no response is received, we note that the subject was contacted and did not respond, or declined to comment.
5.2 Contributor Conflicts of Interest
Writers, editors, and contributors must disclose any financial, personal, or professional relationship with a subject they are covering. A writer who performs with, has been trained by, is employed by, or has a commercial relationship with a subject must disclose that relationship, and in many cases will be recused from covering that subject.
Staff editors maintain a conflicts register that is reviewed on an ongoing basis. Contributors are required to complete a conflicts disclosure upon joining Conjurly as a contributor and to update that disclosure when material changes occur.
5.4 Links to Commercial Listings and External Retailers
Conjurly News articles may include links to external seller websites or to listings within Conjurly’s marketplace operation when those links serve a genuine reader interest — for example, directing a reader to purchase or learn more about a product covered in a news article or review. The inclusion of such links is a reader service and does not constitute an editorial endorsement of the seller, the product, or any commercial relationship.
When a linked seller or product is associated with a Conjurly marketplace participant, that relationship must be disclosed within the article. A brief, clear notation — such as “[Seller] is a participant in the Conjurly marketplace” — is sufficient. This disclosure requirement applies regardless of whether Conjurly derives direct revenue from the link.
The existence of a marketplace listing, directory entry, or other commercial relationship with Conjurly does not entitle any seller or product to editorial coverage, favorable treatment, or inclusion in Conjurly News articles. Coverage decisions are made solely on editorial merit. Conversely, the absence of a commercial relationship with Conjurly is not a barrier to coverage.
Conjurly News does not publish affiliate links — links that generate revenue for the platform based on reader clicks or resulting purchases — without clear and prominent disclosure at the top of the article in which they appear. Any such arrangement is subject to editorial independence review before implementation.
To reinforce the distinction between editorial and commercial content for readers, Conjurly employs an outbound link notification system. Readers clicking from a Conjurly News article to an external website or to a Conjurly commercial operation are notified at the moment of transition. This system reflects our commitment to transparency and to maintaining a clear boundary between our editorial operation and all commercial operations on the platform.
5.5 Review Items, Submissions, and Complimentary Admissions
Creators, publishers, dealers, and publicists are welcome to submit products, books, downloads, and show tickets for potential coverage. Submission creates no obligation to publish a review, generate favorable coverage, or respond within any particular timeframe. Coverage decisions are made solely on editorial merit and available capacity.
Conjurly News does not operate on a pay-for-review or guaranteed-placement basis. Submitting a review item does not purchase coverage, and declining to cover a submitted item carries no implication about its quality.
5.5.1 Disclosure Standards by Value
All review items provided by a creator, publisher, dealer, or publicist are disclosed within any resulting coverage, regardless of value. The form and prominence of that disclosure is calibrated to the value of the item received.
Items valued under $200 are standard review submissions. Conjurly News will note within the article that the item was provided for review — for example, “This product was provided by the creator for review consideration.” No further disclosure obligation applies at this tier. This threshold covers the substantial majority of magic releases including tricks, books, downloads, lecture notes, and most performance tickets.
Items valued at $200 or above — including high-value show tickets, VIP event passes, limited-edition collector releases, and premium props — require prominent disclosure at the top of any resulting coverage stating the nature of the item and its approximate value. Editorial leadership is notified upon receipt of any item at this tier. Receipt of a high-value item does not preclude honest or negative coverage and does not create any obligation to publish.
Any provider who conditions a submission on non-disclosure of the arrangement — that is, who requests that the complimentary nature of the item not be mentioned — will have their submission declined. The inability to disclose is the disqualifying condition, not the value of the item itself.
5.5.2 Disposition of Review Items
Review items received by Conjurly News are not retained for the personal benefit of editorial staff. Items that have been reviewed or considered and will not be reviewed may be repurposed as community prizes, promotional giveaways, or contest items at editorial discretion. This practice reflects our commitment to returning value to the community we serve rather than accumulating personal benefit from the review process.
The use of a review item as a community prize or giveaway does not imply any editorial endorsement of the item beyond what has been published. Giveaway recipients are informed when an item originated as a review submission.
6. Corrections Policy
When Conjurly News publishes an error of fact, we correct it promptly and transparently. Corrections appear at the top of the relevant article with a clear notation of what was changed and when. We do not silently alter published content.
Minor typographical corrections that do not affect the meaning of a passage may be made without formal notation. Any correction that changes a factual claim, a name, a date, a quote, or a characterization requires a formal correction notice.
Readers who believe they have identified an error are encouraged to contact the editorial team. We investigate all credible correction requests.
7. Sensitive Coverage
7.1 Obituaries and Tributes
Obituaries are written with care and respect for the deceased and their families. We verify biographical information and seek statements from family members, close colleagues, or representative organizations where possible. Tributes published by community members are clearly labeled as such and do not carry the same verification standards as staff-written obituaries.
7.2 Allegations, Legal Matters, and Disputes
Coverage of allegations, legal proceedings, or interpersonal disputes within the magic community is handled with particular care. We report on matters of genuine public concern to the community but are not a venue for the adjudication of private grievances. Allegations are attributed to their sources and are not presented as established fact unless they have been legally adjudicated or publicly acknowledged by the subject.
7.3 Coverage of Minors
When covering events, competitions, or performances that involve individuals under 18, we take additional care with the use of names and images and follow applicable privacy norms. Parental or guardian consent is sought before publishing identifying information about minors.
8. Sponsored Content and Advertising
All sponsored content — content created in exchange for compensation, whether monetary or in-kind — is clearly and prominently labeled as sponsored, advertorial, or paid content. It is visually and typographically distinguished from editorial content.
Advertisers have no input into editorial decisions and no right to review or approve editorial content before publication. Sponsored content is not published in a manner designed to deceive readers into believing it is independent editorial coverage.
9. Contributor Standards
All Conjurly News contributors are expected to uphold the standards described in this policy. Contributors must represent themselves accurately, disclose conflicts of interest, and produce original work. Plagiarism — the use of another’s words, ideas, or reporting without attribution — is grounds for immediate removal from the platform.
Fabrication — the invention of quotes, events, sources, or facts — is grounds for immediate removal and, where applicable, public disclosure.
AI-assisted content tools may be used to support research, editing, and drafting workflows, but all published content must be substantively authored, reviewed, and verified by a human contributor. AI-generated text is not published without meaningful human editorial oversight and verification.
10. Conjurly’s Operations and Content Standards
Conjurly is a multifaceted platform built around five distinct operations, each with its own purpose, content standards, and relationship to editorial review. Understanding these operations helps readers correctly interpret the content they encounter across the platform.
10.1 Conjurly News — Editorial Operation
Conjurly News is the platform’s editorial operation. All content published under the Conjurly News designation is subject to the full standards described in this policy: staff or contributor authorship, editorial review, fact-checking, source verification, and corrections accountability. Conjurly News content carries the platform’s editorial endorsement.
10.2 Social Platform Operation
Conjurly’s social platform operation enables community members to connect, post, discuss, and share content in forums, feeds, and groups. Content published within the social operation is member-generated and is not subject to editorial review. It does not carry the Conjurly News designation and should not be interpreted as reflecting Conjurly’s editorial positions. Social content is governed by the Conjurly Community Guidelines.
10.3 Directory Operation
The directory operation provides listings for performers, dealers, manufacturers, and other magic professionals. Directory content is member-maintained and commercial in nature. Listings are not editorial endorsements. Directory pages carry appropriate schema markup and labeling to clearly distinguish them from editorial content.
10.4 Marketplace Operation
The marketplace operation facilitates the buying and selling of magic-related products and services between members. Marketplace content — including product descriptions, seller profiles, and transaction-related materials — is commercial content provided by participating members and vendors. It is not editorially produced or endorsed by Conjurly News.
10.5 Events Operation
The events operation aggregates and publishes listings for magic performances, conventions, lectures, competitions, and community gatherings. Event listings are submitted by organizers and community members. While Conjurly endeavors to maintain accuracy in event listings, they are not editorially produced content and do not carry the Conjurly News designation.
10.6 Educational Operation
Conjurly’s educational operation provides structured learning resources for the magic community, including courses, tutorials, and instructional programs delivered through the platform’s learning management system. Educational content is produced or curated by verified instructors and subject matter experts. While the educational operation maintains quality standards for its instructors and content, educational materials are not editorially produced by Conjurly News and do not carry the Conjurly News designation. The educational operation is distinct from the marketplace operation in that it provides a curated, platform-managed learning environment rather than facilitating open transactions between members.
Content published under the Conjurly News designation is visually and taxonomically distinguished from content originating in other operations. When in doubt, readers should look for the Conjurly News label, which identifies content produced and reviewed under this Editorial Policy.
11. Contact and Accountability
Readers, subjects of coverage, and community members who have questions about our editorial standards, wish to submit a correction, or wish to raise a concern about compliance with this policy are welcome to contact the Conjurly editorial team directly.
Conjurly takes editorial accountability seriously. Concerns raised in good faith will be reviewed by senior editorial staff and responded to in a timely manner.
This Editorial Policy is reviewed annually and updated as needed.
