HOLLYWOOD, California, April 9, 2026 — The Magic Castle is set to reopen Friday night, following a fire earlier this week that prompted evacuations and a rapid emergency response at the historic Hollywood clubhouse, as previously reported by Conjurly.
The venue — home to the Academy of Magical Arts and operated by Magic Castle Enterprises under Randy Pitchford — appears to have avoided extensive damage, with the incident largely confined to a limited area of the building. Pitchford acquired the property in April 2022 and assumed day-to-day operations in September 2025.
No serious injuries were reported. Staff assisted guests during the evacuation, ensuring patrons’ vehicles were quickly retrieved from the valet lot despite fire apparatus and emergency crews restricting access to the already tight driveway.
Three Nights of Operations Impacted
The closure affected three nights of operations — Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday — as repairs were made and officials assessed conditions following the fire to ensure the venue was safe to reopen.
Immediately prior to this week’s disruption, the club was closed for two weeks while scheduled maintenance and upgrades were underway.
Pitchford had recently completed a major upgrade to the Magic Castle kitchen, including a new ceiling structure that helped contain the spread of fire and water damage from the attic above.
Performances are now set to resume Friday night.
Fire Contained Before Sprinkler Activation
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, crews responded Tuesday evening and located flames in the attic of the three-story Victorian structure.
Firefighters entered offensive mode and coordinated ventilation and suppression efforts, bringing the blaze under control in approximately 41 minutes. A total of 68 firefighters responded.
The fire was contained before the building’s sprinkler system activated, helping prevent significant water damage to interiors and historic contents.
A similar fire at the Magic Castle on October 31, 2011 led to a closure that lasted until February 2012, with much of the damage attributed to water used in extinguishing the blaze.
Roofing Work Under Investigation
Ongoing roofing or exterior maintenance work is being investigated as a possible contributing factor, though officials have not issued a final determination.
Early indications suggest the fire may have originated near an area where roofing work — including the use of blow torches — was underway earlier that day.
Presto! The Magic is Back
Built in 1909 and perched above Hollywood, The Magic Castle is widely regarded as the most iconic venue in professional magic — serving as both clubhouse and global stage for members of the Academy of Magical Arts since 1963.
That operations are resuming within days marks what many in the community are describing as a best-case scenario outcome. Some have even called it a miracle — fitting for magic’s home base.
The timing of the announcement carries added resonance for the magic community: today marks the birthday of Magic Castle founder Milt Larson, whose vision helped establish the venue as the global home of magic.
Conjurly Perspective
For magicians, The Magic Castle is more than a venue — it is a cultural anchor.
That it will reopen so quickly after a fire underscores both the resilience of the institution and the critical role of rapid emergency response in preserving it. It also highlights the work of Pitchford and his team as they continue to upgrade the facility and enhance the one-of-a-kind experiences it offers — delivering on that vision even when unexpected challenges arise.
So glad this was not a disaster. Another close call.
Thanks for sharing this update about the Magic Castle. So sorry to hear about the fire, but glad to know they have reopened!
