David Regal’s Color Changing Knives Reappear on Dealer Shelves

Five months after a one-week sellout, the Deluxe Set is back in stock

LOS ANGELES, California, USA, October 24, 2026 — The vanishing act is over. David Regal’s Color Changing Knives Deluxe set, which vanished from dealer shelves within days of its May release, will be available again starting tomorrow.

“I have the knives now and the run came out great – I already shipped to Murphy’s,” Regal told Conjurly.

Regal is a two-time Lecturer of the Year at the Academy of Magical Arts, the author of Interpreting Magic and Constant Fooling, and a television writer whose credits include six years as head writer of truTV’s The Carbonaro Effect. Rather than adapting stock knives for the Color-Changing Knives, a close-up classic dating to the 1930s, he designed his own. He paid five manufacturers to build prototypes to his specifications before choosing one.

Many dealers still have listings for Regal’s original four-knife set, released in 2020 as David Regal’s Color Changing Knives Deluxe. Those listings show the set as out of stock, and the new run doesn’t change that. The six-knife Deluxe Set is the one coming back.

The knives’ black stag and mother-of-pearl finishes let a performer tell them apart by touch, and the blades are dulled but polished so audiences can safely examine them. At the routine’s climax, a black knife with three rivets and a bolster transforms into a red Swiss Army styled knife with neither. The Deluxe edition adds two knives that Regal developed in response to requests from working magicians: one for a slow-motion color change, and a fully examinable red knife that lets the performer end clean. The set includes nearly 40 minutes of instruction covering Regal’s complete routine.

“The weight and shape make the knives want to do the move,” Regal told Conjurly at the time of the release. Performers agreed. Within days, the first run had gone through Regal’s mailing list, Murphy’s Magic, and magic shops around the world, before Regal had a chance to list it on his own website. Conjurly covered both the Deluxe Set’s release and the sellout that followed.

That demand had been building for years. Magician Rick Holcombe, author of Calico, reviewed the original set on YouTube a few years back and kept getting emails from viewers asking where to find the knives. “I’d always have to say, ‘I don’t know,’” Holcombe said on Monster Magic’s The Saturday Show, where he is a frequent guest.

Restocks don’t happen overnight with highly engineered products and strict quality control. When the set sold out in May, Regal told Conjurly he expected the next run in about 90 days. It arrived closer to five months later. Regal hand-inspects every set before it ships. “I have examined every knife in every set,” he told Conjurly. “Yes, my DNA is on the knives.”

David Regal’s Color Changing Knives Deluxe set retails for $150 and is available at davidregal.com. The set is also distributed by Murphy’s Magic, so many magic retailers carry it.
