Pasadena, California, USA, July 7, 2026 — Magician Darrell Moten, 24, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, turned a card trick that appeared to go wrong into a redemptive reveal on America’s Got Talent Season 21, earning three of four judges’ votes in what was his first time ever performing magic in front of a live audience.
Moten built his following during the COVID-19 pandemic performing magic for strangers on the web, becoming known online as a content creator and prankster. Every prior performance had taken place on screen. Taking the AGT stage for the first time, and following a well-received routine from fellow magician Kameron Marshall, Moten was visibly nervous heading into his debut.
A Card Trick Goes Sideways, Then Rights Itself
For his audition, Moten had Cowell pull a card from a deck. When Moten attempted to reveal the card, Cowell mistakenly confirmed it as his own selection. It was not: Cowell had actually pulled the 5 of Hearts, and Moten had shown him the 5 of Clubs.
The mix-up produced a visibly uncomfortable moment on stage. Moten appeared upset and apologetic, and the room read the trick as having failed. Cowell, rattled by his own error, worried aloud that he had hurt Moten’s chances on the show.
Moten left the stage. Moments later he appeared on screen. He had a conversation with Simon asking questions, only to reveal that the supposed conversation was impossibly pre-recorded although it contained Moten repeating Simon’s live answers. Then Moten suddenly revealed that the conversation wasn’t real either and instructed Cowell to look behind him.
Moten then appeared in the back of the room and returned to the judges table and revealed the actual correct card, the 5 of Hearts.
Cowell, Vergara, and Mandel voted Moten through to the next round. Mel B voted no, saying she did not fully understand what had happened.
Whether it was truly a trick gone wrong or all a part of his planned act, only Moten knows.
